Call for a temporary halt to AI development, yet Elon Musk quietly establishes a new AI company.

Is it possible that Mr. Musk is calling on others to pause AI development so that his newly established AI company can catch up with them?

Earlier this year, billionaire Elon Musk had publicly called for researchers to ‘pause large AI model trials.’ Now, a new report reveals that he is quietly constructing a significant AI model for his own use.

According to an article on The New Yorker’s website, what’s even more ironic is that Musk is building an artificial intelligence model called xAI at the very moment when he, along with over 1,000 others, including AI experts who signed an open letter, has called for a six-month halt in AI development.

Moreover, a prior report from Business Insider also disclosed that Musk has been harnessing the computational power within Twitter’s servers to run an AI development project during this same period

Not only that, during that period, Mr. Musk also enticed AI talents from competing entities, including OpenAI, an organization he was a co-founder of before departing in 2018. Additionally, he reached out to leaders at Nvidia—the leading manufacturer of graphic processing units used in AI training, as reported by Business Insider.

According to The New Yorker article, Musk even submitted an application for xAI in the same month the famous open letter began circulating worldwide.

In April of this year, just a month after the open letter was released, reports started emerging that Musk had been engaging with several AI researchers to prepare the establishment of a new AI laboratory. These reports indicated that he was in discussions with investors of Tesla and SpaceX regarding potential support for this project

Shortly thereafter, Mr. Musk also confirmed his intention to create a project called ‘TruthGPT,’ which he described as ‘an AI that seeks the maximum truth to understand the essence of the universe.’

By July of this year, Musk announced the establishment of xAI, with a lofty mission to ‘understand the essence of the universe,’ as stated on the company’s website.

Could it be that Mr. Musk is urging others to pause their AI research so that he can catch up with his new AI endeavor?
