Sony releases a handheld gaming device PlayStation Portal priced at 200 USD.
The PlayStation Portal utilizes PS Remote Play to allow playing PS5 games through a Wi-Fi connection.
PlayStation Portal is the official name of the testing device previously revealed by Sony as Project Q in March. The device will require a minimum Internet connection of 5 Mbps to function and 15 Mbps or higher for the best gaming experience, according to Sony.
To utilize the PlayStation Portal, users also need to own a PlayStation 5 console and can only play games available on the main console. The product does not support the cloud streaming service PlayStation Plus Premium and cannot play any games or open any music or video files on its own.
Sony’s gaming device features an 8-inch Full HD resolution screen, a 60 Hz refresh rate, and a button layout similar to the split design of the PS5 DualSense controller. On top, there is a USB-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and external speakers. Sony has not disclosed any further specific details about the device’s specifications.
The PlayStation Portal only features Wi-Fi connectivity with PlayStation Link, omitting Bluetooth. The product will connect to headphones through Sony’s new proprietary wireless connection standard, which offers lower latency and flexible switching between compatible devices. This technology will be available on the upcoming Pulse Explore and Pulse Elite headphones to be released by the company.
Sony plans to release its new gaming device later this year at a price of 199 USD.
