When AI draws portraits of Leonardo da Vinci, Alexander the Great in the 21st century, how will they appear?

In the era of Industry 4.0, terms like artificial intelligence (AI) have become quite familiar to humans. Artificial intelligence utilizes vast Big Data systems to store massive amounts of data during the process of data collection and learning from humans.

Thanks to these extensive data ecosystems, AI can operate intelligently and adapt to various forms of data and different environments. It’s evident that AI is not merely a computer program with logic, but it also encompasses human intelligence. AI can think, reason, solve problems, and communicate with humans. Due to these remarkable capabilities, AI offers immense benefits.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) possesses numerous exceptional features, making it applicable across various domains.

In recent years, the use of artificial intelligence in the field of visual arts and design has seen significant development. However, the creative processes in art and design are still largely driven by humans. To explore the practical application of AI models in executing creative designs, artist Becca Saladin from Royalty Now Studios conducted an experiment that combined artificial intelligence with art, history, design, and Photoshop to create portraits of over 100 historical figures in a 21st-century context.

We have seen portraits of figures ranging from Alexander the Great to Queen Victoria, William Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci, and many more countless times. But have you ever wondered how these historical figures might look in the modern era? Let’s find out together!

1.  Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great (356 BC – 323 BC) was the son of Emperor Philip II, who shaped and built the Macedonian Empire. Despite only living to the age of 33 and reigning for 13 years, he remains one of the greatest emperors of the Argead dynasty in ancient Greek history. He is regarded as one of the most successful military commanders and one of the most brilliant strategic tacticians in human history.

Alexander the Great is honored as a supreme military commander, having almost never suffered a defeat during over 13 years of warfare. In fact, until his passing, Alexander the Great led campaigns that conquered nearly the entire known world of his time.

William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English playwright and writer, considered the greatest writer in English literature and a pioneer in the field of drama. Shakespeare’s career brought him world records that he likely never anticipated during his lifetime. As of 2014, William Shakespeare held the title of the world’s most “bankable” playwright, with his plays and poetry generating over four billion pounds in sales in nearly 400 years since his passing. He is also the third most translated author in history.

In contrast to the old portrait with dangling earrings, where William Shakespeare appears rather romantic, in the modern depiction, he wears glasses that lend him an intellectual and elegant air.

3. Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) was a painter, sculptor, architect, musician, doctor, engineer, anatomist, inventor, and natural philosopher from Italy. He is regarded as the most versatile genius in human history. He is the creator of renowned artworks such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.

He was a visionary far ahead of his time, particularly with concepts like the helicopter, tank, parachute, solar power usage, computer, rudimentary theories of topography, dual-hulled ship, and numerous other inventions. Some of his designs were realized and practical during his lifetime. Furthermore, he made significant contributions to knowledge and understanding in anatomy, astronomy, civil engineering, optics, and hydraulic research.
