Changing the USB-C port for the iPhone 15, Apple bye the ‘cable clutter.’
Recently, Apple officially announced the new iPhone 15 series, including four models: iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. A notable upgrade shared by all four iPhone models is the USB-C port, replacing the 11-year-old Lightning port.
This is actually an “upgrade” that was not originally planned by Apple. The reason for this change stems from regulations imposed by the EU, requiring mobile products sold in the region from 2024 onwards to use the USB-C port.
However, the USB-C port is a feature that iPhone users have long anticipated. The majority of current tech products, including Apple devices like MacBook and iPad, have already transitioned to the USB-C port. The iPhone remained the “odd one out” still using the Lightning port. This has been an inconvenience for users who constantly have to carry both USB-C and Lightning cables to charge their iPhone and other devices.
Furthermore, even Apple understands the “plight” of users with older iPhone models featuring the Lightning port. Right on the official iPhone 15 website, Apple states: “The new USB-C connector lets you charge your Mac or iPad with the same cable you use to charge iPhone 15 Pro. Bye-bye, cable clutter“
Moreover, the USB-C port allows the iPhone to act as a “power bank” for other devices. Specifically, Apple mentioned that the iPhone 15 can charge AirPods or Apple Watch through the USB-C port. This is highly useful in emergency situations.
