Despite having several upgrades in terms of its folding mechanism, it appears that the Galaxy Z Fold5 will not have dust resistance capabilities according to IP standards.

Recently, there have been numerous images circulating of Samsung’s two new foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5. Both are said to feature a new folding mechanism that allows the two halves of the screen to fold flat against each other when closed, minimizing creases when unfolded.

And recently, a Twitter account named Ahemd Qwaider posted three real-life photos of the Galaxy Z Fold5 to confirm this. In the two side-by-side photos of the device, we can see that the Z Fold5 folds almost completely flat, with a much slimmer gap compared to the current Galaxy Z Fold4. Rumors suggest that Samsung will utilize a new hinge mechanism called the ‘water drop’ hinge to achieve this design. These images were quickly taken down upon Samsung’s request.

In this series of photos, we can also see the rear camera system of the device, with a slightly thicker metal bezel surrounding it compared to its predecessor. Despite the external differences, the Z Fold5 is said to reuse the camera system from the fourth generation but with improvements in image processing capabilities.

Twitter account Ice Universe has also provided additional information about the new foldable smartphone lineup, stating that the device will not achieve an IP58 dust resistance certification. The current Galaxy Z Fold4 has obtained an IPX8 water resistance certification and has measures in place to prevent dust from entering the device’s internals, but it still does not meet the IP certification. It is likely that the fifth generation will follow a similar pattern.

Samsung is set to announce the Galaxy Z Fold5 alongside the Z Flip5, Galaxy Watch 6, and Tab S9 series at the Unpacked event at the end of this month.
